The Question That Signals Competence
Certain questions reveal more expertise than answers do. Asking what would falsify a claim, which assumption carries the most risk, or what evidence would change the recommendation signals that the asker understands the structure of the problem. The question demonstrates competence without asserting it.
This reverses the usual dynamic. Professionals typically demonstrate capability by providing answers, and the answer display invites comparison and evaluation. The question does not invite comparison; it establishes the frame within which answers will be assessed.
Developing this capability requires understanding what makes an argument vulnerable. For those building influence through their professional development strategies, question design is a leverage skill. Our inquiry framework provides design approaches.
